Clothing & Weather

May marks the end of spring season in Denmark, but can give early indications of summer with lovely weather, warmer temperatures and light green leaves on the trees. Bornholm can be a little late in receiving the warmer weather, but May is still one of the more popular times of the year to visit. The average afternoon high is a pleasant 19°C (66°F) 

Cut-off Times

For the MARATHON the time limit is 7 hours from the start and there is a 3.5 hours cut-off time half-way (at 21km) for the marathon runners.

For the HALF MARATHON the time limit is 6 hours.

Any runners still on the route after the time is up, will be picked up and driven to the finish line. 


The Viking Island Marathon features two distances:

Full marathon - 42.195km/26.2mi

Half marathon - 21.1km/13.1mi

Distance Change

It is possible to change the distance you want to run up to 10 days before the race starts. All you need to do is contact us with your request.

Change of distance is NOT PERMITTED on Race Day.


Full marathon runners must be at least 18 years old on race day.

Half marathon runners must be at least 16 years old on race day.

Finish area

The finish area is located at Hotel Skovly for both marathon and half marathon.

A BBQ snack with a beer or a soda is served to all runners at the finish line. 

Goodie Bag

International runners will receive the goodie bag with start number and more upon check-in at your hotel. 

Local runners can collect their start number at Hotel Skovly on Friday between 16.00 - 19.00 or Saturday morning between 05.30 - 06.30.

Medical Team

On race day, a team of English-speaking Danish doctors will provide medical assistance to runners in need. The medical team reserves the right to remove any runner who is deemed unable to complete the race. Please note that all decisions made by the medical team or race officials are final.

Doctors and race officials will be positioned along, and move in and out of, the route, but will not be able to monitor all parts at all times. We kindly ask all runners to look out for each other and report to race officials, water stations or doctors if you see a fellow runner in need of help.

Personal Belongings

It is possible to deposit bags with personal belongings in the starting area. These belongings will be transported to the finish area.

Although the finish area will be manned, depositing personal belongings in the area is entirely each runner’s responsibility and the marathon organizers are not responsible for loss or damage of personal belongings.

Prizes and Awards

All finishers receive a medal. A small, symbolic prize is given to the winners of both distances for men and women. Please note that there is no prize money.

The race officials reserve the right to change the course and other aspects of the race without advance notice.

In order to register for the race, you must enter with one of the following options. 

5-day tour package: This package includes all the ingredients for a fantastic getaway: accommodation, social events and select meals. Package also generally include ample amounts of free time, during which you can choose to join organized excursions or explore Bornholm on your own.

7-day tour package: This package includes the same as the 5-day tour package, but also includes 2 days in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, with options to see some of Denmark's famous castles and other highlights. The package also include ample amounts of free time, during which you can choose to join organized excursions or explore Copenhagen and Bornholm on your own.

Registration Deadlines

Registration closes on 18 April 2023.

Please note that this race has limited capacity, so first come first serve.

Distances: Marathon and Half-Marathon

Route info

Where the route turns into single trails we kindly ask that you communicate with each other if you wish to pass a runner in front af you and equally make space for runners coming from behind.

Note that the route is not closed off to the public. Please respect local pedestrians and cyclists and watch out for traffic when running on/near the streets.

Rules & Regulations

Top Finishers: The top three male and female finishers of all distances are the first three to physically cross the finish line regardless of their net time.

Gear: Nordic walking and trekking poles are not allowed.

Start / Bib Numbers

All runners will receive one bib number that must be worn during the race. It must be attached to the front of your body and readable - both for safety and for photography purposes. The bib numbers are color-coded according to the distance you are running: 

- Full marathon bibs - black
- Half-marathon - red

Time Taking & Results

The Viking Island Marathon will be timed manually with certified timing watches. No chip system is being used.
The results will be published shortly after the race is finished.

Transfer to the start

Bus transfer to the start is included in the 5-day and 7-day tour packages. Local runners with a Race Package Only can also book the transfer to the start.

The bus for the marathon start will depart at 06:45 from Griffen Hotel and at 07:00 from Hotel Skovly.
The bus for the half marathon will depart at 07:45 from Griffen Hotel and at 08:00 from Hotel Skovly.
Local runners who have pre-booked the transfer to the start must board the bus from Hotel Skovly.

Kindly note that spectators are not allowed to join the bus to the start lines as the busses will not return to Hotel Skovly.

Water stations

11 manned water stations will be on the route and in the finish area. Water and electrolyte drink (elderflower flavor) is served at all stations.

The collapsible cup in the Goodiebag is your personal cup for race day and must be used at all water stations during the race. The cup is easily folded and kept in your pocket. There's no cups at the stations meaning: No cup = no drinks.

It is also allowed to wear a camel bag or bring a cup or bottle of your own choice.

We ask for your patience at the water stations and please keep distance and form a line if necessary to avoid grouping around the stations.
